# How to Stop Window Condensation in Winter (and When a Dehumidifier Helps)

## Key takeaways

- Condensation forms on the cold glass, not in the room. Warm indoor air that meets a cold surface can drop water, so the fix is either less moisture in the air or a warmer surface.
- Start free: put a hygrometer on the sill, run bathroom and kitchen fans, and keep air moving across the glass. EPA lists exactly these steps for preventing condensation.
- If you run a humidifier, turn it down first. It is the most common reason a normal house starts sweating in the first cold snap.
- A dehumidifier helps when humidity is genuinely high all over the house, such as a tight home or a damp basement feeding moisture upstairs. It does not help a dry house with one cold window.
- Wipe standing water off glass and sills. EPA says mold needs moisture and that damp materials are best dried within 24-48 hours.

Wet windows in the morning are one of the first signs of winter, and the usual reaction is to reach for a dehumidifier. Sometimes that is right. Often it is not. Condensation has a short list of causes, and the cheap fixes work for most of them. This guide goes in the order we would try things: measure, remove moisture at the source, move air, warm the glass, and only then decide whether a dehumidifier belongs in the plan.

## Why do windows get wet in winter?

Condensation is simple physics. Indoor air carries water vapor. When that air touches a surface colder than its dew point, some of the vapor turns to liquid. In winter the coldest surface in most rooms is the window glass, so that is where the water shows up first.

AirQualityCalc’s humidity reference makes the same point with a worked example: indoor air at 72°F and 45% relative humidity has a dew point of about 45°F, so a pane that drops below that will fog. The same page notes that adding humidity indoors raises the dew point, which is why humidifiers and wet-air activities such as showers matter. We cite it as a secondary source, and the example is illustrative, not a promise about your windows.

That gives you two levers. Lower the moisture in the air, or make the glass warmer. Everything below is one or the other.

If you want the numbers for how the safe humidity ceiling drops as it gets colder outside, our [ideal indoor humidity in winter guide](https://dehumidifierreview.com/posts/ideal-indoor-humidity-in-winter/) has the outdoor-temperature table. This post is about what to do when your windows are already wet.

## How do you find out whether humidity is the cause?

Buy a hygrometer. EPA describes a humidity meter as a small, inexpensive instrument available at many hardware stores, and it is the one purchase on this list worth making before anything else. Put it on or near the sill where the condensation forms, and put a second one in the middle of the room if you can. Air next to a cold window behaves differently from the room average.

Read it in the morning, when windows are wettest, and again in the evening after cooking and showers. What you see sorts you into one of three groups:

- **High everywhere.** Readings above EPA’s suggested ceiling of 60 percent, or sitting above 50 percent for days, mean the house genuinely holds too much moisture. This is the dehumidifier case.

- **Moderate, but windows still sweat.** Readings in the comfortable 30-50 percent range with water on the glass usually mean cold glass rather than a wet house. Warming the glass and moving air matter more than removing moisture.

- **Spiky.** Humidity jumps after showers, cooking or laundry and then falls. A better ventilation habit, not an appliance, is the fix.

Keep notes for a week. It takes the guesswork out of every decision after this one.

## Which free fixes should you try first?

EPA’s guidance on preventing condensation is short: reduce humidity, increase ventilation or air movement, cover cold surfaces such as pipes with insulation, and increase air temperature. In practice that turns into a checklist.

Run the fans, and run them long enough. EPA says to run the bathroom fan or open a window when showering, and to use exhaust fans or open windows when cooking or washing dishes. In a tight house, a fan switched off the second you step out of the shower leaves most of the steam behind. Leaving it on for a while afterward is a habit, not a purchase.

Vent what produces moisture. EPA also lists clothes dryers, stoves and kerosene heaters as moisture sources that should be vented outdoors where possible, because unvented combustion appliances add water vapor. Check that the dryer duct is connected and the kitchen hood actually exhausts outside rather than recirculating.

Move less water into the air. Dry laundry on a rack in the living room and you have added that water to the house. So have long uncovered pots on the stove and hot showers without the fan. None of these is a problem in a leaky old house, but in a tight one they add up.

Check the humidifier. If you run one, it is the first suspect. AirQualityCalc’s guidance is to keep a hygrometer near the windows and lower the humidifier setting if condensation appears. Turn it down a notch, leave it for a day or two, and see whether the glass dries out. A whole-house humidifier set during a mild week often needs lowering when the first hard freeze arrives.

Dry the surface when it happens. EPA says to act quickly to dry a wet surface and reduce the moisture source. A squeegee or towel in the morning takes a minute, and it keeps water from soaking into wooden frames and sills. This is the step that stops a nuisance from becoming a mold problem.

## Can air movement and window coverings help?

Yes, and this is where many houses win without spending anything. EPA lists increasing ventilation or air movement and increasing air temperature as ways to prevent condensation. For windows, that mostly means getting warm room air to reach the glass.

- **Open blinds and curtains during the day**, or at least leave a gap at the top. A heavy drape closed against the pane makes a small pocket of cold, still air right where condensation forms.

- **Do not block heat sources.** A sofa or deep sill planter in front of a register keeps warm air away from the window it was meant to reach.

- **Use a ceiling fan on low** or a small fan pointed along the wall so air sweeps across the glass. You do not need a draft, only movement.

- **Keep furniture a few inches off exterior walls.** EPA notes hidden mold can form on the surface of walls behind furniture where condensation forms, so a cold exterior corner is worth checking.

These are practical habits, not measured results, and the effect varies by window. Treat each change as a test: make one, then look at the glass the next cold morning.

## Does sealing or upgrading the windows help?

It can, with a caveat. Condensation tends to be worst on the coldest glass, so anything that warms the interior surface helps. Better glazing, well-fitted storm windows and interior insulating film kits all work by keeping the inner surface warmer. They are a bigger project and a real expense, so we would try the free fixes and a hygrometer first.

The caveat is that sealing air leaks around a house also reduces the natural air exchange that carries moisture out. In a house that was already damp, a tighter envelope can leave more humidity indoors. If you seal, plan the ventilation at the same time, with fans that actually run and a hygrometer to check the result. A tight home that sweats is exactly the situation where a dehumidifier or a proper ventilation system starts to earn its place.

Do not caulk over mold. EPA’s guidance is blunt that moldy surfaces should be cleaned and dried before painting or caulking, because the material will not hold.

## When is a dehumidifier the right answer?

A dehumidifier makes sense when the hygrometer says the whole house, or at least the level the windows are on, is genuinely humid and the free fixes have not brought it down. The common cases:

- **A tight, well-sealed home** where showers, cooking and breathing keep humidity high, and ventilation alone cannot keep up.

- **A basement that is still releasing moisture** from the slab and walls, with that damp air rising to the floors above. Our [basement humidity before heating season guide](https://dehumidifierreview.com/posts/basement-humidity-before-heating-season/) explains why fall is when this shows up.

- **A house with a crawl space or a damp lower level** where wet windows upstairs are the symptom, not the cause.

In those cases, the hygrometer typically stays well above the 30-50 percent that EPA calls ideal, not just in one corner. Our [capacity sizer](https://dehumidifierreview.com/tools/capacity-sizer/) will turn square footage and conditions into a pint rating.

## When will a dehumidifier not help?

It is worth being direct, because this is where money gets wasted.

- **Dry house, one cold window.** If the hygrometer reads in the comfortable range and only an old single-pane window sweats, a dehumidifier removes water the room never had. Warm the glass instead.

- **A cold, unheated space.** Compressor dehumidifiers lose output as the room cools. The Santa Fe Compact70, for example, is rated 70 pints at 80°F, and our spec notes list about 43.7 pints at 65°F. Colder rooms do worse, and GE’s guidance, says most units do not run satisfactorily below 41°F.

- **Active leaks or standing water.** Per EPA, you fix the water problem and clean up the mold. A dehumidifier does not replace gutters, grading or plumbing repairs.

- **A humidifier fighting it.** If both are running in the same air, turn one off before buying anything.

## Which dehumidifier suits a damp house with wet windows?

If your measurements say you do need one, match the unit to where the moisture comes from. For a damp basement that is feeding the house, two of our reviewed units cover most cases. Figures come from our model data.

[AlorAir Sentinel HD55](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08N6C4GPP?tag=dehumidifierreview.com-20) is the budget option for a moderately damp, single-zone basement. It is 55 AHAM pints, rated for spaces up to 1,300 sq ft, Energy Star certified, with a 5-year warranty and a gravity drain. Our review notes a basic MERV-8 filter, and in a cooler space treat 55 pints as a ceiling rather than a promise. [Santa Fe Compact70](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07HCLL7FY?tag=dehumidifierreview.com-20) is the pick for a larger or cooler space where headroom is tight. It is a 70 AHAM pint, 12-inch-tall steel cabinet with MERV-13 filtration and a 6-year warranty, rated up to 2,200 sq ft, with an 8-foot gravity hose included. It is not Energy Star rated. One portable in the one room that is damp is often enough. If you find yourself planning a second, size up carefully, because a whole-house-class unit is a different purchase.

## Should you buy now or wait for Black Friday?

Black Friday 2026 is November 27, a few weeks out. We have not verified any 2026 dehumidifier offers, and our [dehumidifier Black Friday guide](https://dehumidifierreview.com/posts/dehumidifier-black-friday-deals/) explains what we can and cannot say about deals. The practical rule is that if humidity is high now and you can see mold or smell mustiness, do not wait. Measure first. If your hygrometer says the house is fine, you may not need to buy anything at all.

## A one-week plan for wet windows

- **Day 1:** Place a hygrometer at the sill and one mid-room. Write down morning and evening readings.

- **Day 1:** Wipe the glass, frame and sill dry each morning. Do not let water sit.

- **Days 1-3:** Run the bathroom fan during and after showers, and the kitchen fan whenever you cook. Open blinds in the daytime.

- **Days 2-4:** Turn down the humidifier a notch, if you use one. Move any laundry rack out of the main living space.

- **Days 4-7:** Check the readings. If they are in the comfortable range and windows are dry, you are done. If they sit high all week, look at the source: a damp basement, a vented dryer, a leak.

- **After a week:** If the house is still high with the free fixes in place, a right-sized dehumidifier is the next step. Our [how to choose guide](https://dehumidifierreview.com/posts/how-to-choose-whole-house-dehumidifier/) walks through the decisions in order.

## The bottom line

Window condensation is a signal, not a diagnosis. Measure, then remove moisture at the source, keep air moving across the glass, and dry what gets wet. Turn down the humidifier before you buy a dehumidifier. When the hygrometer shows the house genuinely holds too much moisture, a tight home or a damp basement feeding the floors above, a dehumidifier is the right tool and the one that fixes the cause rather than the symptom.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why are my windows wet in the morning?
Overnight the glass is the coldest surface in the room. Warm indoor air carries moisture, and where it meets glass colder than its dew point, water condenses. EPA says condensation on windows, walls or pipes can be a sign of high humidity. Measure with a hygrometer before assuming the cause.

### Is window condensation always a sign of a humidity problem?
Not always. Very cold glass can sweat at ordinary indoor humidity, and the colder it is outside, the lower the humidity at which that happens. Our ideal indoor humidity in winter guide covers how the limit moves with outdoor temperature. A little fog in the corners on the coldest nights is different from water running onto the sill every day.

### Will a dehumidifier stop window condensation?
Only if indoor humidity is the cause. In a tight home or a house with a damp basement, lowering humidity can stop it. In a dry, heated house a dehumidifier adds nothing, and many compressor units struggle in cold rooms anyway. Check a hygrometer first.

### Do curtains and blinds make condensation worse?
They can. Closed curtains or blinds can trap cold air against the glass and keep the room's warm, circulating air away from it, so the pane stays colder. Opening them in the morning, or leaving a gap, often helps. This is general building practice rather than a measured figure.

### Should I turn my humidifier off if windows are wet?
Turn it down first and watch the windows for a day or two. If they dry out, you found the cause. A humidifier and a dehumidifier running in the same air just cancel each other out, so adjust one of them.

### Can condensation on windows cause mold?
It can if the water sits. EPA says no mold grows without moisture and that drying wet areas within 24-48 hours usually prevents growth. Wipe the glass, frame and sill, and fix the moisture source. If you find mold, EPA's guidance on cleanup is the place to start.
